Equality and freedom are fundamental necessities of the human beings. However, back to the American society of nineteenth century, both necessities was abandoned by inhumane system of enslavement and black people’s simplicity. Frederick Douglass used to be part of that time period, under the pathetic slavery system. As one of the most influential black lecturer and orator in American history, Douglass wrote down his own experiences as a former slave in the style of narrative. His words demonstrate that leaning or gaining knowledge is the most important thing led to freedom for black people in his time. Mr. Douglass’s narrative records his growth from a ignorant and helpless child slave to a wise and brave racism fighter. All the story began with Douglass’s uncertain of and separation from his family members. Under a certain slave-child system in 19th century, Douglass was born as a slave and had no power to get rid of the upcoming enslaved destiny. Also, since t he â€Å"common custom in Maryland† forced him to spend little time with his mother, grandmother and related siblings, the natural bond between the family members were broken. For Douglass, he thought he â€Å"received the tidings of her death with much the same emotional should have probably felt at the death of stranger†.
